Using Smartmode in Composer 4

I am having a little trouble with the new smartmode in composer 4. I normally enter notes by adding a new one that ends the duration of the previous one. If the new note is close to something else, like a end of bar or a rest sign, smartmode will select the object rather than add the note. Is there some setting that I can set that will make this either go away or make it less sensitive?

Hi Blane,

You can still right-click the mouse to change the mode manually to Select or Add, or click the corresponding button on the tool bar to make that mode change. That will put you in the selected mode to do your note entry the way you've done it previously.

Hope this helps!

I use the note adding mode where a mouse click adds a new note and ends the duration of the previous node. The problem is when the new note is the same as the previous note. The previous note duration ends ahead and when I try to add the new note, the previous note gets selected and the new note does not add. Similarly, if the new not is close to a rest or a measure bar, those objects get selected rather than adding the new note. Below is an illustration. I am trying to add a B at the beginning of measure 13. The B that ends measure 12 gets selected and the new note does not add.

I like the smart mode but am having a little trouble with it.

Hi Blane,

Thanks for the more detailed report. I have been able to reproduce the problem of not being able to add the new note of the same pitch at beat one of a following measure. I'm writing this up for a fix. In the meantime, there is a work around that you can use that hopefully won't be too much trouble. If you add the new note for beat one just above or below your desired pitch, you can then use the keyboard shortcut "P + Up/Down arrow key" to adjust the pitch of the newly added note to the correct pitch.

I was not able to reproduce this problem.

Some reasons may be:

  • difference in the Beat Ruler divisions (I tried 8, 16, and 32)
  • difference in Zoom (I did try unzoomed and then zoomed using the toolbar button 2x)
  • the way I hold my mouth (just kidding - that was something my Grandma always said might make a difference in the way things turned out ;) )

If you have a good series of steps or a situation that shows these behaviors please let me know.

ttfn,
Sherry

Yeah, I found that work around. I'll send you a snapshot of the other behaviors when I run across it.

It think it is how one holds their mouth. Maybe squint, too!
