selecting multiple notes with keyboard

Is there a way to expand the current selection using the keyboard?

Typically I would like to add notes vertically to start from one note and add other notes in the chord to the selection so that I can then change the duration for example.

I can only see how to do this with the mouse, but it would be realy nice to be able to do this with the keyboard.
