Hi friends,
A friend of mine asked me if I'd like to do an arrangement of "I Saw Three Ships" for a group of us that would be playing for their church's Christmas Eve service, and she gave me the instrument list (with a couple of "maybes") for me to consider. I decided to give it a shot, and here is what I came up with. The percussion is pretty simple here, but I just wanted to give the "feel" - I know the percussionist, and I'm giving him full liberty to fill it out as he sees/hears it fit Also, the "bell" on the percussion part will be removed if the "Bells" person gets to play For our performance, the "maybes" are doubled parts so that if they don't play, the arrangement should still hold together. The arrangement isn't too complicated - it has some doubled parts, and the main interest is a bit of harmonization and the key changes - but I think for doing it in a single day, it turned out ok. I'm looking forward to hearing real live musicians play it and add the nuances of their own to the performance. ISawThreeShips-sac2013.not As always, it will sound a bit cheesy on the default GS Wavetable device, but I'm hoping to record the live performance and will post a link to that if/when it happens. Merry Christmas to all! Sherry

Good job, Sherry! I was particularly tickled by the "Bach"-ish Flute work at Rehearsal Mark 55.

Very nice, Sherry! The full Christmas sound.
Of course, those ships wouldn't sail very far today, around here -- ice and snow and more ice. Ho, ho, ho! David |

Hi Sherry.
I've been enjoying this arrangement. Some (rather random) comments:
Thanks for sharing your file. Ta, Walt |

Hi Walt,
Thanks It was a lot of fun to perform it live. We did end up with some changes -

Then I pointed out that if she played really strong and let the flute back off a bit, that it would make sense with the bari drone supporting it. They did, and it did, to my and the bell player's delight Quote:
It was fun to try and add something interesting to the bridges while maintaining a connection to the main melody. I was pretty happy with how it all came together.Quote:
The last four bars of unisons at the end did sound pretty cool - we were in a side room off the main sanctuary, and I could feel the floor vibrate ![]() Quote:
). She gave that "Bach-ish" section some real Irish flair, and she sounded fantastic!Quote:
I used a MIDI keyboard to record the rhythm (it also shows how my timing on keys is not as good as it is on bass or real bodhran ), and copy/pasted the two different measures where I wanted. If I'm scoring something that requires pitches, I still do it this way - record the rhythms first, then just use the P + Up/Down Arrow keys, adjust the pitch, Right-arrow key to the next note, fix it, etc, etc. Fairly quick, and it does preserve the "live" feel while giving playable sheet music.Quote:
The bell player had a great triangle with her that sounded like a ship's bell, which was the effect I was going after. She played a glockenspiel for the bells, as well as the triangle for the intro/outro. She was definitely brilliant ![]() Quote:
I myself have never written for that sort of mix (I have done a couple of arrangements for our big band), so it was a new venture for me. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and my friend who asked me to arrange has already said she has some ideas for next time we play together. Thanks for the encouragement, and I'm glad that you're enjoying it. I did not get a recording of the performance, but might try doing an mp3 using my GPO library. ttfn, Sherry
