Unhappy Sound problem

I have two licences and have just re-installed Notation 3.04 on both my desktop and laptop.
When I play my saved notation score on either it plays back with a warbly music sound which is impossible to recognise as what I composed. Like its not being "driven" correctly. Wishy washy sounding. Lacking clarity or note sound definition.

From sometime way back I seem to recall this able to be remedied by changing a setting in the Registry?
If someone knows what I need to do to get back my "proper" sound when playing scores, Please let me know.
I am stuck with this warbly sound and cannot play scores so as to properly listen to them, or even begin to create new or modify earlier saved scores as the sound is really annoyingly terrible to have to contend with.
Cheers

Hi, homeboy26:

First, I think you should be able to update 3.04 to 3.1.0; I'm not quite sure on that, but I think so.

To more directly address your problem, it may be as simple as re-booting your computer, if you tried to play something directly after re-installing Composer.

If that doesn't help, go into the Setup>MIDI devices>configuration box. Find the Notation Software Synth entry and click on the NON-bold line.

In that box, click on the Driver button and make sure ASIO is selected. You can also manually set the buffer size and buffer count from there. The bigger the buffers and the more the buffers, the smoother the playback BUT with more latency (lag) in the sound. It's a compromise, usually.

If you click on the Soundfont button, you can set the amount of gain for playback. If it's too high, it may distort -- and digital distortion is something you don't want! Lower it might clear things up.

I hope that helps.

Hi all,

Turns out (from a discussion at the helpdesk) the issue with homeboy26's situation is most likely trying to run Composer 3 on a Windows 11 machine. Due to changes that Microsoft made in the operating system's audio and MIDI handling, version 3 of our software doesn't work properly. Since version 4 was the current release version at the time of Windows 11 release we did the development work to fix it in the release version. We did not do the additional fix in version 3 since it was (and is) considered a legacy version at that point.

ttfn,
Sherry
