Wrong Assignment of Drums in Composer
Recently, I changed keyboard (to a Yamaha Tyros 3) and installed the latest Yamaha Midi-USB diver, downloaded the right instrument definition patch but now, although all the other instruments sound right, I'm getting a constant wrong assignment of what should be drums to Acoustic Grand Piano. It's easy enough to change but time consuming if you're working with a large number of files.
Rather than altering and resaving every new file, is there a Global setting I can alter? It happens regardless of whether there is a 'proper' Acoustic Grand Piano part in that file or not. Freddie |

Re: Wrong Assignment of Drums in Composer
Hi, Freddie:
I don't own a Tyros myself, but at a guess: The Tyros, being an advanced system, probably does not automatically assign Midi Channel 10 to a drum bank, so you have to make sure that the drum bank is selected manually. (Have you found that it's the bank you have to change to make it work?) Unfortunately, I can't think of any global parameter that would do that automatically for each file you load. Daivd |

Re: Wrong Assignment of Drums in Composer
Thanks David.
Yes, I discovered the right Bank (right down the bottom of the list). What a shame you can't alter the default globally. Is that something that's set in the Instrument Definition file? I ask because I know a member in one of the Yamaha Forums (Fora?) who creates such things and who would gladly make up one for me (we all have to get our kicks in our own way, I suppose) if I asked him, I think. Thanks for your answer anyway. Freddie |

Re: Wrong Assignment of Drums in Composer
Hi, Freddie:
Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with the instrument definition file, rather with the way the architecture of the Tyros is set up. Most basic General Midi capable instruments default to the drum bank sound set when Channel 10 is selected -- the instrument is capable only of drum sounds on Channel 10. The Tyros, however, is much more flexible and keeps its options open on Channel 10: it may be that the owner doesn't wish to use that channel for drum sounds. Therefore the drum bank(s) must be explicitly selected. There may be a GM selection in the Tyros' operating system that will lock Channel 10 onto the drum sounds, though. Check the manual or online for hints. David |

Re: Wrong Assignment of Drums in Composer
Thanks David. I understand.
I'll check one of the many Manuals we're given. And maybe those on that part of the Yamaha Forum (there are 3 or 4 good ones) that specialise in Sequencing and the like might help. I'll post again if I find an answer for any other Tyros owners who may encounter the same problem. Thanks again Freddie |
